the overheat alarm may not have caught it, he made a huge jump in mhz, easily enough to fry the CPU instantly. second, if you ae going to overclock your system, you should get better cooling, and not rely on that sensor to stop you. its there to stop you when a fan fails.

there is no pin, the read head never toutches the platter. but hard drives will produce noise when they are only given power. but it is not a sign of life from the system.
