Does your bios have a critical temp alarm? I have a similar motherboard that will sound an alarm and shutdown if the temp gets over 72C. It saved my ass when I set my clock speed up too high. If you did have that, it seems like it'd shut it down before any harm was done. Also, Did the computer ever POST after you set the clock speed up? It seems like the comp could make it past POST at least once before it overheated enough to fry the mobo and/or processor.
