Well, you can go the Mercedes route. They are extremely reliable and you can put virtually infinite miles on them. My roomate owns one and it runs perfectly with over 200,000 miles. I believe his is a 300D from the late '80's, but I don't know the exact year. Inline 5 w/turbo, so the acceleration is adequate but hardly fast.
I was looking here and it appears that your options are pretty limited to Mercs and VWs. The TDI is definitely a solid choice, but I'd at least browse local listings for older Mercedes before making your purchase.

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty
