>>>if this turns out to be some sort of re-education experiment where "bad people" with redeeming values are put into some sort of Matrix-like machine to make them better... I am going to be really pissed.>>>
Hmmmmm.... I don't think this is some Matrix place, but one theory I have is that on the far side of the island, there is a billionaire and he flooded the plane with hallucination gas and then had "his" pilots land the plane on an air strip on the far side. Then he probably had killed all the passengers that tried to escape and then the billionaire had the pilots crash the plane on purpose, so the alive ones would "remember" the crash. The island might have magnetic healing powers, but it also has mental instability powers as heavy magnets can affect your brain. All islands can be seen from satelites, so all islands with fresh water have been purchased or are part of Oceania countries. So a billionaire owning the island would explain why the survivors were not rescued by conventional means like in normal situations. The pilots were owned by the bored billionaire, who affected by the magnetic healing island is going insane slowly. The foggy monster might be micro tiny black holes created by the powerful magnetic fields causing the noises and destruction. When I saw the movie Donnie Darko, I thought of this possiblity. So anyway, the airline probably called the billionaire and asked, did a plane crash nearby. He says no, and that is the end of the searching as they are searching elsewhere. And the island is not on usual flight routes. But I think the show would be more realistic if they showed satelites moving overhead at night or 30,000 plane water trails during the day. So it is possible that it used to be a government site that was disbanded because of the micro black holes killing people. When they left, they left in a hurry and left one part of the government film and people make up whatever story they like to explain all the weird outdated computer and numbers stuff. I think the billionaire purposefully set up the numbers stuff as a joke on Hurley. The billionaire maybe has a hatred for lottery millionaires ? LOL I sometimes wonder if Locke is the mad billionaire, since he is alluded to have a super rich dad. He kills his dad or makes it look like an accident and gets rich. That would explain why he finds the hatch/bunker on a huge dense jungle island. And he also happens to find "a guitar" as well. With his billions he cures himself and he no longer needs the wheel chair. But for fun he rides in the slow descent crash as he is bored with life and partially insane. The billionaire would also be able to bring polar bears to the island as well. The billionaire could also use mind altering drugs to make people forget the first safe landing if they awoke from the knockout gas in the plane. Or perhaps the ones that dies, did awake and the billionaire thought they would spoil the fun. Perhaps Locke was already going insane before he became super rich ? His talking with people on the phone and playing god with figurine rpgs. And his outbursts of "You can't tell me what I can and can't do !!!!"
But this is just my prediction. Ohhhh you know what would really be cool ? If the writers of the show, actually read all these messages on every message board they could find and, on purpose, wrote the show in directions away from what people were guessing ! That would be pretty clever.
Ah well, I'm just a fan of the show. *smile*
