This is my experience as well.
What I have found is that they appreciate it more when you dress up for them. I don't always where a suit but occasionally I have met my wife at the door dressed up in my best suit. She likes the look and appreciates the effort to look good for her.
In fact, the last time we went out on a date we both got dressed up to go dancing. Not only did she like the fact that I was looking good, she liked the fact that she was looking good too... aphrodisiac doesn't begin to describe the effect it has on her.
