As long as the squirrels haven't seen Caddyshack.
What about getting a pepper spray cannister and spraying your wiring with it? I have to admit I don't know if that leaves a smell, and I imagine you'd have to exert some care in the process.
Othewise, something with the motion detector idea sounds kind of cool.
