How is he not? It means experiencing something or having something done on through someone else, or on the behalf of another person.
"Vicariously I live while the whole world dies." - more or less a social commentary on how people are glued to morbid news.. for ex, everyone couldn't stop watching the 9/11 plane footage over and over. So in a way.. you get an experience from the suffering of others.
Sounds like it fits perfectly to me.
