Tool was
never a cookie cutter band, thier music has always been 'out there.' In the past, they just didn't feel the need to layer things with all sorts of extra sounds, multiple layers of harmonized guitar parts, tons of effects pedals, etc.
Not that what they do now isn't awesome, just that I liked the raw sound.
