You'd have to talk to him? To be
sure? I'll go out on a limb here and say that there is not a shadow of a doubt that he's nuts. No remotely sane person does what he did. No one.
The question remains...should he be deprived of the balance of his life? In this case...I'd probably lean toward a yes vote. The only reason, and I do mean the
only reason to keep providing him with nourishment is, as you've already pointed out...research. I only hope there is a lot of painful hole poking, of one fashion or another, in whatever studies are conducted upon him.
