i know how you feel, i had to watch my grandfather wither away to nothing, i was a strong man and we had to see him loose the ability to do anything. so, i'm with ya and i'm sure a lot of people are too.
on saying good bye, the only thing that i can say is just be there! you don't need to say anything .... just be there for your friend, that's more than enough.
