Definitely go for something feminine, soft, but nothing too sexy -- if the bride so much as thinks you're upstaging her, you could be in for a catfight. Don't wear anthing that brings too much attention to you.
Of course, that doesn't mean you can't look great! Just shop around and find a dress that flatters you and fits you well. Something you can wear a few more times would be good, so you're not splurging on one day.
Feminine, soft, conservative ... oh, and with coordinating shoes. They don't have to match, they just have to look cute together. And whether you're standing or sitting, low heels (1"-2") would be the most comfortable on a small budget (expensive high heels are fairly comfortable, but I take it you're not planning on spending $500 on a new pair of shoes).
