Currently serving a co-op (I'm in school for Materials Engineering) with a ballistic materials supplier, there's definitely a demand for some type of range simulation software. It would be incredibly useful to simulate some of our shooting to reduce the strain on our range. Granted it can never replace real testing but it would be a useful tool and you could use your degree.
Hell, there are ways to get yourself into the firearms industry. I'm sure these companies need computer support of some kind, it wouldn't be direct involvement but you could at least get your foot in the door.
