I get shin pain too... It's a right bastard of a thing. Takes ages to go away - and it can get so bad (if you try to push through despite the pain) that walking is a problem
Only way around it that I've found is to build up distance really really slow. I think I got around it once - I snuck into the running habit by walking a few house blocks, running one, walking a few, running one etc. Then I slowly did more. I also did strength and stretching work for my ankles at the time, and swimming.
But 'cos of shin pain, I'm not that keen on running.... for myself.
