I am feeling obsolete having been involved with a good old-fashioned phone bank (Okay...two retirees and a college kid) sitting in the campaign office making direct calls by voice...we never had a machine or anything.
The quantities can be pretty daunting when you start analyzing even a precinct, so I can see why some resort to more automated methods. If I was involved in the campaign however, I would be concerned about increasing the disinfranchisement of voters or even backlash as I personally hate machines on the phone (I admit a product of poor man-machine interface circuits on my side, probably), even when I call them. Once I realize a machine is calling me, I automatically hang up.
