CD/DVD repair

I wasn't sure what forum to put this in, please move me mods if this is the wrong place.

but i've come across a lot of my discs are damaged not the point where they won't play, but to the point where when i try to make backups (in case they really are destroyed) my DVD burner won't read certain ones. I was wondering if anyone knows a good tool (besides the toothpaste and toilet flushing examples) that actually work?

I've heard that discdoctor's are really great but i'm not sure if it's just the ones you can buy at any best buy store or what. There are about a millino products out there that claim to work, i was wondering if anyone had any first hand experience.

thanks!
