I know exactly where you are coming from. It is hard to get past that mental block, but it is worth it. I'm 18 years into my relationship, and my feeling comfortable directly asking for sex (rather than leading there through foreplay) really only came a few years ago.
Remember, sex is about communication, and if you can't ask for sex, how do you ask her to do that specific thing that really turns you on?
