First words out of my mouth were always "Is the machine plugged in?" "Is it turned on?" You would be absolutely amazed at how many times those two questions "corrected" the problem.

"Is the computer plugged in, sir?"
"OF COURSE it's plugged in! Do I sound like an idiot?"
"No, sir. But if you would please just humor me. Please find the power cord at the back of the computer and trace it to the wall electrical outlet."
"Okay, fine. ... Okay, I told you, it's plugged in."
(sound of a computer booting up)
"Hunh. Was that the computer starting?"
"Yeah! Hey, that's weird! Well, I guess it all works now. Thanks! Bye!"
