That's a tough question. To begin with, I guess it really depends on what you call evil. One person's "evil" is another person doing what they have to do to get by...
Now in the case of a serial killer... that's evil. It's also, more than likely, a mental condition. They know it's wrong but their ability to stop the compulsion has gone haywire. Are they sick? Damaged? Self-centred? I don't know.
If we are to look at a fictional character like Darth Vader, he choses evil because he believes he's doing the right thing. I think there are quite a few people who can understand that slow march to evil.
EDIT: technically, no I have never shop lifted anything.
Have you ever done something you considered evil. What was it and why do you think it was evil?
