It's a convention but not all drivers pay attention to Network Address. Others expect the value to follow manufacturer ranges or they bail back to the hardware assignment. Check ipconfig /all to see if it's really changing, then plug in the cable.
Not a bad idea though. If your driver supports it, trying a bunch of addresses would be your best bet for invalidating the switch's MAC cache. Then again, you might get a midnight visit from your friendly net admin police.
