I had found an article on it at one point... and now can't find it again... and it suggested colors (OK they were using high end lipsticks, like Chanel) for skin undertone, and hair color, etc... but you could always use the color as a suggestion and go hunting at cvs or walgreens for less expensive products...
There are reds that have a brownish base, some that are more plummy, some that are more blue-y - (I'm not color aware enough to know what color is which though)...
