With regards to Leaside, I can tell you that it will be at least another year, if not more.
The job is however going well.
A great deal of steel is being replaced, as is the entire deck, and the piers are being repaired. The deck may be done in a year, but the piers and the deck will not be.
Leaside is actually higher than the viaduct and yes, people are jumping off. Leaside was not closed for a jumper as per that blog however, it was closed for 15 minutes to allow the bridge to be jacked up 1/4" and the old bearings to be changed out.
The logic behind the fence on the viaduct is that suicide is sometimes impulsive and it will prevent that kind of suicide. The well planned out suicide can not be stopped by a fence. Personally, I think what they did to the viaduct is quite ugly. It cost around 7 million bucks too by the way.
Has it worked on the viaduct? Absolutely.
Has it reduced the number of suicides, I don't know.
