Cypress is the maker of the USB->IDE adapter inside the enclosure. AT2LP is the series of adapter and they've made several versions. There do seem to be quite a few people having the problem.
Who makes the enclosure? It's likely they've heard about this already. Microsoft, too, since XP certainly knows about USB mass storage devices. This chipset must provide additional functionality and one of the updates woke it up. One of them (MS or enclosure vendor) will come up with an update.
Last ditch you could try Cypress' reference driver. It's 3yrs old but might get you access temporarily. <a href="http://www.cypress.com/portal/server.pt?space=CommunityPage&control=SetCommunity&CommunityID=209&PageID=418&r_folder=Software%20and%20Drivers&r_title=Windows%20Mass%20Storage%20Driver%20v.6.01">ReallyLongURL</a>

If they can be brought to raise questions and apply their decent instincts and basic intelligence, many people quickly escape the confines of the doctrinal system and are willing to do something to help others who are really suffering and oppressed." -Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media, p. 195
