You're right -- and wrong. Thing is, there are two kinds of mouth sores: cold sores (aka fever blisters) and canker sores. Cold sores are the ones that occur outside the mouth on the outer lips (and can also appear elsewhere on the face). Canker sores appear only inside the mouth, on the tongue and on the inside lining of the lips, mouth, and throat. Cold sores are caused by herpes. Nobody's really sure what causes canker sores; maybe a lot of things.
