I've wondered the exact same thing, myself.
I first heard of the Patriot Guard Riders last...what? December, it must have been. There was a write up about them in my American Legion magazine. There is an offshoot of the Legion, called The American Legion Riders. 100% recognized, and supported by the American Legion.
Someone (I can't recall the name), in the ALR, got the idea to start protecting the grieving families, of fallen soldiers, from Freddy boy, and his merry band of misbegotten misfits. Although the American Legion rallies behind the concept, they cannot endorse the American Legion Riders in their participation, because should anything get out of hand and *ahem*
"happen", then the American Legion becomes liable. (Basically Commander Bock didn't want a picture of someone with an American Legion logo on their back, punching Fred in the nose, to end up on the AP) So...the Patriot Guard Riders were formed. And I, for one, don't think that these men can be thanked enough.
