I don't think there is an association, but an association is nevertheless generally percieved. I think the reason for the perception is that the Republican party derives some of its support from a very vocal but small group of ultr-right wing Christian fundamentalists. People tend to equate repbulican with conservative, and democrat with liberal, so by proxy those with strong religious affiliations would be assumed to be conservative.
But it is an interesting thread.
