I didn't list Opeth because I've never listened to them. I'm always in search of new good music and I like it when I start listening to an existing band with a long history because I'll have several new albums to digest. Some day I'll get around to listening to them.
Expanding on calling songwriting talent a subjective item:
What defines good songwriting? Mass appeal, mood setting, ability to transition through different themes, seamless fusion of lyical content, vocal sounds, and musical tones? All those things are part of it but it's often used as an easy out for justifying talentless musicians that are somehow popular (Nirvana, Pearl Jam?). Additionally, there are different standards for every genre. Personally I think Led Zepplin sucks hairy donkey balls and is the most overrated rock band ever but if you listen to albums like Ride the Lightning (Metallica), Amok (Sentenced), Sound of Perseverence (Death), and NOLA (Down) you can see that there is just so much to those albums those albums rival the best ever made.
