Joke: What do you call someone who hangs out with musicians?
A: A drummer! <i>rimshot</i>
I was a hack drummer in our high school garage band, and had a great time. I have nothing but respect for Neil Peart and the like, but it's hard to keep a solo from becoming self indulgent. Once it turns inward, or drops its arc, it's over.
To my ear, this happens mostly on technique obsessed jazz fusion compositions. That, or Peter Chriss solos.
Now why is it that the rythmic drums of other cultures (Latin, Taiko, African etc...) are the most captivating?
