me too.
i'm a very picky/perfectionist person, and the ability to spell has always come naturally to me,
so of course i cannot understand why some others find it so difficult.
(...or, why some people are too lazy to fix their damn typos).
*however*...
choosing to spell something differently...is a different matter.
why would someone do this?
from my own experience, my #1 motivator is efficiency.
why should i type 'though' when i can just type 'tho'?
(obviously only appropriate in certain informal settings...)
and sometimes, it's æsthetics.
i do not have any specific examples atm, but i do know there've been occasions where i've manipulated, perverted letters and text for some other purpose..
now...regarding '1337-speek' ...
i use it sometimes in small doses, with people who i kno won't be annoyed with it. in such contexts, can be 'funny' or 'cute' (since i'm a girl..)
and i must admit, in my Google prefs i oft have 'Hacker' selected as my display language.
to each their own, i suppose...
altho it would quite likely annoy the fuck out of me if i had to converse with a 12-yr old in such a way.
bleh.
