Thanks for all the replies. I still haven't decided is this is where I want to go. England is too large an area to cover for the short time I can get off. I realize that I wouldn't have to see the whole country on the first trip.
One of the reasons that I would like to return to Ireland is that I'm somewhat familiar, so to speak, with the driving, conversion rates, car rental, et al. I also like the fact that non-stops from ORD are (relatively) cheap. The flights directly to Scotland are about 1.5 times the cost from what I can find. When you throw in the monetary conversion to pounds it get's a bit lopsided in favor of Ireland!
The driving in Scotland must be similiar though. If it looks close on the map you can figure twice as long to get there! For a country that only as big as West Virginia (square miles wise), the lower speed limits combined with the narrow curved roads conspire to make you take in the breathtaking scenery!
