I think that (although not shown), it's already happened. It's already tested Locke, I believe. I think it happened early (I can't pinpoint the time). Remember when it was pulling him into a hole on Season 1 and he said "let me go! It's testing me!" (or something similiar)? He already knew what it was, so I think he faced it down before that.
