I totally agree. They should never have shown the black smoke thing. Implied it was there, but never shown it.
How much more frightening would it have been if they had just cut back and forth between Mr. Eko staring it down and Charlie wetting himself interlaced with gutteral growling and first-person camera shots from the 'monster's' POV?
One of the reasons I've always enjoyed Lost was the fact that strange shit happens, but not strange enough to
require an outlandish explanation.

And good for Charlie. I don't know what he's planning, but it's nice to have an 'escape' plan. If faced with starving to death, getting eaten by a polar bear, beaten to death by the 'others' or floating off to oblivion....I'd probably have to go with oblivion.
Edit: Just checked out the Fark thread and there was a reference to Eko's name and the word Echo (empty copy). I thought that was interesting since during one of the flashbacks Eko's brother told him he had no soul.
