I'll admit to only having a passing familiarity with KISS, so I wasn't aware that Bob Kulick filled in before Vinnie. I also forgot about Mark St. John (I knew this beforehand but didn't remember when writing the above post) but seeing as the question was about the first replacement and not the subsequent ones, I reckon that doesn't matter.
Anyone up to speed on Nirvana trivia and want to take a crack at mine, or should I try something a little easier?
EDIT - Sorry, flyman, I missed that previous post. Both of those answers are acceptable.
Nirvana was officially created in '88; Kurt and Krist played prior to that together under a variety of names (such as Pen Cap Chew and the ever-charming Fecal Matter) with a man by the name of Aaron Burkhard on drums. They did a bit of work with Dale Crover here as well; he did the drumming for their first demos, including the Love Buzz demo. Finally, they settled on the name Nirvana and quickly got rid of Burkhard after he got drunk one night and ended up getting Kurt's car impounded. They briefly used a man by the name of Dave Foster here, although he's rarely mentioned. Fact is, he hardly played with them. He was hired as their second drummer in '88, but didn't even make it to the Love Buzz recordings before they sacked him (Crover filled in on that demo).
After that fiasco, they settled on Chad Channing, who played drums for them from '88-'90. In 1990 they decided that Chad just wasn't right for the band, so they fired him. Crover filled in for some of their demos again, before a man by the name of Dave Grohl was referred to them. And we all know how that turned out.
So, in summary, the acceptable answers (in order) are Aaron Burkhard, Dave Foster, Chad Channing and Dale Crover.
As to Grohl's song, I'll give you a bit longer to see if you can dig it up.
As a hint, the song Spoiler: appears only on one single as the B-Side to one specific track of the In Utero album.
