Some laptops have "docking stations" as options. e.g. I have an IBM thinkpad with a docking station. Keyboard, mouse, video and speakers etc... plug into the docking station. The laptop the plugs into the docking station with one big connection on the bottom of the laptop.
This just makes it easier to use the laptop as a desktop.
