Actually he's not really leaving the show, he decided to take the backseat for it in order to spend more time with his family. Kinda similar to what Amanda Tapping is doing but it's undecided at this point how much of a role he is going to play once in awhile.
I have all 8 season on DVD and I absolutely love the show. I only wish Space Channel would stop showing reruns of Season 1-3 and start showing the latest stuff
By the way:
Gateworld actually has a transcript of all of the episode up to season 8 and some for season 9. I haven't seen either of Hero Pt1 and Pt2 and I'm afraid to considering...
I haven't seen any of the new Atlantis, so no comment there
