I know there have got to be some really good homebrew side-scrollers out there. I don't really mean the crap people make in Klik 'n' Play and try to pass off as real games, but some actual fun games. Something I could maybe use my gamepad with and kill some time.

Duke Nukem had a 2D scrolling shoot em up - possibly Manhattan Project?
Have you ever tried emulating?
When I was over in Orlando in November there was a Contra/Castlevania double pack in the bargain section. This featured Castlevania 1-3 and two Contra titles.
