I honestly don't think a dog is a bad idea... I would just wait until your household settles down... Puppies need a lot of attention and training, I just don't think it's fair to the dog that he wouldn't get the attention he needs.
Fish are good... Hamsters -- not so much wit the young one... Ferrets can be a little smelly..
