im in the "just replace the drive" crowd. call xbox div at microsoft, explain the problem, ask if a new drive is the solution and go that route. ask about discounts for sending in your old broken drive ( they usually don't tell you about them, but will verify if you ask )
as far as the "microsoft and walmart are big corp meanies:" I would hope you wouldnt take the alternator off of a rental car simply cause your Ford warranty just ran out before it died.
