Re: Your license, I think you have a good plan. Or as good as any, anyway.
To get a truck, I'd recommend going to the bank for a loan if you don't have the money. Get a parent or other family member to co-sign for you, somebody who does have good credit and your lack of credit won't matter.
And no, not every pick-up is standard. Most of the are automatic, these days.
