"Perpetrator is attempting to flee" doesn't exactly describe this situation. Had he run out on the street, then someone had followed him with a shotgun and gunned him down, they'd be in jail. Murder and reckless endangerment.
In this instance, however, where the guy was locked in and trying to kill them, someone would have been perfectly justified in killing him right back.
