I think it's a little bit said that one cannot even speak their 'own' language when it is possible for them to learn. That's why I have been thinking of the 'making my future kids learning all the languages me and my loved one are fluent in' question

She doesn't, but I didn't know that at the time.
I think the most important thing is immersion. Movies, books, media in that language will give a practical application of the language and make it stick better.
As for mixing up the languages, well, you can't help that. I remember listening to my French teacher lapse into Spanish once in a while during class. That was confusing.
