She doesn't, but I didn't know that at the time.

I think the most important thing is immersion. Movies, books, media in that language will give a practical application of the language and make it stick better.

As for mixing up the languages, well, you can't help that. I remember listening to my French teacher lapse into Spanish once in a while during class. That was confusing.
