Morton was a lovely child
His parents would beam with pride
He smiled when greeted with hello
he hardly ever cried
As he grew he taught himself
to read and write and sing
his parents marvelled every day
as he took in everything
handsome as a child could be
strangers would compliment his looks
but morton didn't care for that
he only cared for books
'more words, please', he would ask his mom
and she'd oblige him every day
morton would take the books mom gave
and in his room he'd hide away
unconcerned with his love to read
his dad and mom thought this great
until one night a loud boom was heard
and they went to investigate
into morton's room they went
and were met with a wondrous sight
on a throne of gold sat their handsome son
bathed in a veil of light
'hi, mom, hi, dad', morton called
'do you like what i've become?'
all the words you gave to me
the books that i've learned from
i'm a wizard now, the best there is
i can grant your every dream
there's nothing that i cannot do
I'll be held in high esteem
morton's mother began to cry
his father couldn't speak
the sight before them was too much
they felt their knees get weak
'i only wanted you to learn'
said his mother to herboy
'i didn't think you'd do such things
i thought books gave you joy'
morton laughed and replied
'but they have, as you can see
they gave me power beyond belief
they gave the world to me'
his father found his voice once more
'grant one wish, my son
that all we see before us now
quickly becomes undone'
knowing that he had to do
what he said to them he'd grant
with head bowed down, he raised his arms
and quietly began to chant
The throne and light faded away
his parents sighed in relief
morton sat on his bed
and shook his head in disbelief
'i could have given you everything
we could have had it all'
'no more books!' his father yelled
'tomorrow, we play basketball!'
