Hubby dipped for years while in the Marines. He started because it would help him stay awake during overnight training/guard duty, and since everyone else in the Corps either smokes or dips (well, almost everyone it seems), and he was always being offered dip or smokes, he took up dipping (he hates smoking, go figure). He quit about a year ago and I'm very proud, I know it's a hard habit to break.
As for it being disgusting...it's not really worse than smoking...neither are pleasant. It really doesn't stink though, unless you don't get rid of your spit container immediately...now THAT is disgusting.
