I've known a few people who are completely rotten to the core - the sort who give the strong impression that they believe that other people exist merely to provide them with amusement. If ever I was in a position where one of them needed my help to avoid having something bad happen to them, my attitude would be: I'm not going to kill you - but I'm sure as Hell not going to lift a finger to save you.
