You are thinking of the cervix. The vagina does not dilate. It is forced open as the baby comes out, and it usually tears.
Someone needs to make a sticky explaining this, I have heard more people talk about how "my dick/hand/dildo can't be too big, a baby fits through there!" than I ever wanted to hear.
