My "take" on this is that he was
contributing. According to
CNN.com he played something like $20 worth of tickets. He therefore contributed to the pool to be won. I doubt he expected to win, but he played, so it could happen. And it did. Check out the CNN story, as Mal is correct in that he's largely tied up in stocks and real estate. Not that he's poor, nonono. Still, if you play, you can win.
