It seems to be quite costly, but think of it this way... you only have to get it done once every 6 to 8 weeks. I go once a month, so each time is less painful because there's less hair to remove. The rate I'm going, in a couple of years.. the hair will be so less and so fine that I won't even have to go anymore. I hope.
I did try a home-waxing kit years ago. Yep. it was awful. Most of the hair wouldn't come off, and most just broke off halfway. Needless to say, I chucked it. Be assured it won't be this way with a professional waxer.
I have dark hair. I used to have wiry and curly hair down there as well. But since I started waxing, the hair that grew back is soft and fine. Besides, they never get to grow any longer than half an inch as I go back every month.
My waxer always goes 'This is the price of beauty...but it's worth is, yes?'
And I always go 'Yes!!...OW!!!...yes yes..OW!!'
And she goes 'I knew you will agree with me.. everyone does'
'OW!!...mm hmm... mmpphhh ><...uhhh yes yes..'

Go for it, ladies. Give it a shot. And Sweetpea, change waxer, is all I can say.
