My daughter (age 5) is one of those girls -- she loves horses, period. My older sister also was a horse fanatic. I asked her once what the big appeal was, and she said that horses are just inherently lovable, they're gentle, obedient, strong, loyal, and have that long flowing hair that you can brush and ornament.
Add to that the fact that you live in a city and don't get a chance to see them or ride very often, and the longing never really gets satisfied.
