Strange memory problem
*sigh*
Let's make a long story short - Attempted RAM upgrade in an eMachine, need to use expensive, low-density RAM to reach 512mb, put both 256mb sticks in, johnson boots, windows gets pissed and won't load, comes up fine in BIOS, sticks pass grueling memtestx86 tests, BUT any 256mb stick + any old 128mb stick = works!
