I don't mean to be a stick in the mud, but i decided to plug that coordinate into a globe instead of a flat map and got:
The line is from Sydney to L.A., the assumed intended flight path for 815. The circle is what I've named Obsession Isle. This is how far off-course, perpendicularly, the island would be from the intended path:

This puts the island about 186 miles off-course.
A thousand miles from the supposed island, intersecting with the flight path would be either

or

... and they're supposed to be a thousand miles off-course.
