I don't think defense of a nation or other nations need stem from an emotional response.
A reasoned and rational understanding of your relationship to the larger community is, too me, much more valuable and less likely to dissappoint than an emotional response.
To invest emotionally in a nation means you are far more suceptable to being manipulated (for good or bad).
